Was taking a selfie with President Obama on your bucket list? Looks like you might have to find a replacement. You have David “Big Papi” Ortiz, Red Sox slugger and Samsung Galaxy “celebrity insider” to thank for this nonsense.
Ortiz took a selfie with the president last Tuesday during the team’s visit to the White House. While the selfie appeared spontaneous, it turns out that Ortiz has a deal with the Samsung Galaxy Note to perform these kind of PR stunts. The selfie has been retweeted by almost 43,000 Twitter users, including Samsung’s official account. It looks like Ortiz is pretty good at his side job.
“Maybe this will be the end of all selfies,” White House Senior Adviser Dan Pfeiffer said about the incident Sunday on CBS’ “Face the Nation.” “[Obama] obviously didn’t know anything about Samsung’s connection to this.”
“Someone who uses the President’s likeness to promote a product… that’s a problem with the White House,” Pfeiffer added. “We’ve had conversations with Samsung about this and have expressed our concerns.”
Here is the offending Tweet, complete with the selfie of POTUS and Papi:

So thanks, Big Papi, for ruining the dreams of an entire selfie-obsessed generation.
