Texas Senator Wendy Davis has begun to inform top Democrats that she will run for governor in 2014, Politico has reported. While Davis’s staff is tight-lipped about the decision, Davis advisor Hector Nieto said the senator will officially announce her decision next week.

“Sen. Davis has decided what she will do and she looks forward to making that announcement with her grass-roots supporters on Oct. 3,” Nieto said.

Texas and national Democrats have been attempting to persuade Davis to run for governor since she garnered national attention with a June filibuster over new abortion clinic regulations. Earlier this month, Davis sent an email to supporters indicating that she would announce her decisions for 2014 at an event at the beginning of October.

Davis currently trails Republican candidate for governor and current attorney general Greg Abbott in the polls — an official announcement and the media attention that comes with it might bring the numbers closer together.

While Davis has yet to officially announce, a showdown between Abbott and Davis has been a thing of national speculation for a while. Last month, the Republican made national headlines for tweeting his thanks to a supporter that called Davis “retard Barbie,” and predictions of a “bruising” election have already been making national headlines.
