George H.W. Bush acted as official witness at a same-sex marriage in Maine

George H.W. Bush same sex wedding witness

By Jessica Huseman

You read the title right — George H.W. Bush and the infinitely sassy Barbara Bush were official witnesses at a same-sex marriage this past weekend in Maine. It’s unclear if Papa Bush is in favor of all same-sex marriages or just this particular one, but either way, it made for an awesome wedding story. Plus — look at his socks!

The newlyweds are Bonnie Clement and Helen Thorgalsen, co-owners of a Kennebunk, Maine general store. In an email exchange with the Washington Post, Clement said they have known the former first couple for years and, after they accepted the wedding invitation, Clement and Thorgalsen decided to ask them to “really personalize it for us” and act as their witnesses at the wedding — and they said yes!

Thorgalsen posted the picture to the right on her Facebook with the caption, “Getting our marriage license witnessed!”

“This is such a wonderful time for change in our legal system,” Clement told WaPo. “Who would be best to help us acknowledge the importance of our wedding as our friends and as the former leader of the free world. When they agreed to do so we just felt that it was the next acknowledgment of being ‘real and normal.’”

Bush’s office hasn’t released a statement about the event, but his rep Jim McGrath confirmed H.W. and Barbara’s attendance at the wedding saying, “They were private citizens attending a private ceremony for two friends.”
