DNC video tribute has Ted Kennedy attacking Mitt Romney from grave

By Jessica Huseman

A tribute video to the late Senator Ted Kennedy at the Democratic National Convention on Tuesday quickly turned into an attack on GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney, as clips from Mitt Romney’s losing Senate campaign against Kennedy appeared, attacking Romney largely for his stances on abortion and healthcare.

“Now he’s for family leave, now he looks like he’s for minimum wage, now he’s for education reform, if we give him two more weeks he may even vote for me, because those are the things I am for!” Kennedy told a screaming audience about his opponent, calling up images of his wishy washy political behavior that are still present today.

The video also pegged Romney on abortion. During his 1984 run against Kennedy, Romney told voters he was firmly prochoice and that you would “not see [him] wavering on that.”

“On the question of the choice issue, I have supported the Roe v. Wade. I am pro-choice. My opponent is multiple choice,” said Kennedy resolutely after Romney retold the audience he believed in a woman’s right to choose. The video clip was in stark contrast to Romney’s current stance, which is now firmly pro-choice.

David de la Fuente, field director of the Dallas County Democratic Party and a delegate for Obama at the DNC, told Politically Inclined the video received “the biggest applause of the night, especially Kennedy’s retort at a Senate debate that Kennedy himself was prochoice while Romney’s mixed record made him multiple choice.”

“At the end of the video, more than half the delegates in the audience had teared up,” he said.

The 7-minute video dedicated more than a minute and 10 seconds to attacking Romney, and was received particularly poorly by Republicans (obviously).

Tweeted Reince Priebus, chairman of the Republican National Committee:

But if you really want to talk about a lack of class, you need look no further than the tweet from Erick Erickson, the editor-in-chief of RedState.com:

But really, if Republicans could conjure up video of Reagan attacking Obama…wouldn’t they do it? Ted Kennedy is the equivalent of Reagan to Democrats: a political demigod who defined the party and was a spot on good politician. That they have video attacking the current GOP candidate is just too good to pass up.

As Ezra Klein tweeted:

I mean, really.

This is politics, folks. But, judge for yourself:
