UT College Republicans having a bad run at presidents

It’s a bad day when you forcibly elect a new president of an organization because the last one tweeted about how “tempting” it was to assassinate Obama, and then your new president tweets this:

Cassie Wright, the former VP of UT College Republicans, was elected to office after the group convened to elect a new president when Lauren Pierce refused to resign after repeated requests. Clearly, Wright has learned nothing from the former president’s Twitter scandal that left her the subject of several national news reports.

In response to a call from ABC, Wright actually defended Pierce’s tweet saying, “Insofar as she’s a representative [of the College Republicans], maybe it shouldn’t be said, but she’s made a positive statement in a way.”

To be clear, Pierce’s tweet read:

“Y’all as tempting as it may be, don’t shoot Obama. We need him to go down in history as the WORST president we’ve EVER had! #2012.”

OK, so Wright’s tweet wasn’t about assassinations, but according to Burnt Orange Report her tweet about Obama being black and doing a lot of crack was preceded by a stereotypical comment about Asians a few days before.

“What kind of messed up world is it when I’m studying hard in the library and the Asian guy next to me is watching America’s Next Top Model episodes on his laptop??” said Wright’s thoughtful status.

When her Facebook friend, John, asked why being Asian had anything to do with this, Wright responded:

“Because Asians study a lot, John. If you are offended by my use of a stereotype then gfto (get the f*** out).”

I emailed UT College Republican’s Public Relations Director John Chapman about this yesterday to see if they were releasing a comment, but I haven’t heard back. The Daily Texan got a comment from UT CR spokesman Cesar Villareal in an email on yesterday evening, though. He personally apologized for Wright’s tweet, and said the tweet was “her own and not in keeping with our core values, our standards, and our code of conduct.”

At the time of this post, Wright had not apologized herself.

I did, however, hear back from President of Texas College Democrats David de la Fuente, who said, “I truly feel sorry for the GOP if the UT College Republicans are any indication of the talent pool of future leaders in their party.”

I’m going to refrain from seeing this as an indication of future talent in the GOP (because, hopefully, other states’ college Republicans have their act together), and I’m also going to refrain from calling Wright racist (though racially insensative is probably appropriate), but I will point out that this girl is the most ignorant user of social media I’ve ever seen. She goes to UT, so I’m going to assume that someone in her college career said the words “Watch what you put on the internet, it will come back to haunt you.” Clearly, even after watching the repercussions of not being careful on the internet explode in front of her former president’s face, she hasn’t learned her lesson.

This is another incident in a long line of embarrassing events for College Republicans in Texas. Early this year, the statewide group’s chair resigned after making disparaging comments on a video posted to YouTube. Then, Lauren Pierce, who served as both president of UT’s College Republicans group and secretary for the statewide group, tweeted her tweet. She refused to resign from both positions, and while UTCR removed her and elected a new president, the statewide group hasn’t removed her from office and has instead just elected a second secretary. Now this.

It’s time to get your act together, guys.
